MOVING DEEPER IN YOUR BACKBENDS with Ben HEMSON-STRUTHERS
Thanks for shopping with The Yoga Shop UK!
We take pride in our products. After all, we have tried and tested these products to make sure they are a high quality for you! Your order is important to us, which is why we want to make sure that your products arrive at the time you expect them and in excellent condition. Please take a moment to review our delivery and order processing policy to be informed of how and when your order will be processed and delivered.
Orders placed by noon on a working day (excludes Public Holidays) are processed and dispatched on the same working day. Orders which are placed after this time will be processed the following working day.
We are a small team of three working between the office and warehouse - if there is an issue with your order processing or dispatch we will contact you as soon as possible to discuss, and let you know how your order will then be processed and delivered.
**Please be aware that any orders placed on or immediately following a release date or during a sale, your item(s) may be delayed and may require up to 48 hours of additional processing time.
You may also collect your order from our Edinburgh warehouse which is located at 25 Dunedin Street, Edinburgh EH7 4JG by selecting this option at the shipping/delivery page whilst placing your order. Orders can be collected Monday - Friday between 9am and 5pm.
For evening/weekend collections you may collect from our sister yoga studio, Union Yoga Centre at 25 Rodney Street, Edinburgh, EH7 4EL by special request only. Simply select 'collection from the warehouse' and then get in touch so we can designate a day and time for your collection. Union Yoga has a small reception area - so they cannot store orders awaiting collection.
Delivery Methods within Mainland UK
We use DPD, Royal Mail and occasionally Fed Ex to ship orders.
Packages shipped using DPD are trackable and insured. If your order is not delivered as promised, we can issue a replacement or refund to you. Unfortunately, DPD does not service P.O. Box or APO addresses.
Packages sent via standard Royal mail are unfortunately untrackable.
We send you an email when we dispatch your order from our warehouse. We recommend when ordering for next day delivery that you ensure someone is in to recieve the order (or enter an alternative address for delivery).
Delivery times are of course for guidance and cannot be guaranteed unless we specifically describe them as such. Generally there are no issues but please be aware that very occasionally issues arise with the carrier and your order may be delayed.
We take great care to pass on any delivery notes that you provide with your order, but of course once we pass this on to the carrier it is up to the delivery driver to comply. We send the orders to be signed for, and so if you provide delivery instructions (such as leaving in an outbuilding etc) which results in a package being lost/damaged we are really sorry to say that the insurance/compensation would be invalidated.
International Shipping: We can deliver to you almost worldwide! Rates are calculated based on a number of factors, including desired service level, the weight of the item, and the cost of shipping, handling, and customs clearance from the UK to the destination country/region.
Want to check shipping charges before making a purchase? Add items to your cart and click the "check out" button. Don't worry, you will not be charged for an order until you submit your credit card information! You can also get in touch with us - we are happy to talk through your requirements!
Delivery charges vary depending on the package size, weight, destination and shipping method.
Delivery Promotional Offers
Like our customers, we are fans of delivery promotions. Unfortunately, however, any special delivery offers available on our website apply only to orders shipping to a UK Mainland destination.
We also regret that free delivery and/or other shipping promotions do not apply to oversized packages. Additional shipping charges will be added to all orders containing oversized products at the time of processing. You can always contact us for more information.
You to can learn to 'Bend it like Benji' moving deep into your backbends as you open up your body and mind.
Deep backbends like Ustrasana (Camel) and Urdhva Danurasana (Upward Bow Pose) usually happen towards the end of a yoga class, and the time leading up to these postures should be spent preparing the body.
So before attempting these poses, it’s important to focus on opening and activating the areas of your body that you need to get into the posture safely.
The name back bend is a bit misleading, as much of the strength and flexibility required to do these postures safely actually comes from the front of the body.
For safe and deep backbends, you need open but strong quads and hip flexors, good mobility in your chest and shoulders, and a strong core to support you.
If we lack strength or flexibility in the areas listed above, we tend to bend from our lower back in order to ‘deepen’ the pose, which can cause serious pain and harm to our spine in the long run. Avoid this by following proper alignment in backbends:
- Create a solid base. Ground firmly through all four corners of your feet and hands, lifting through your calves and quads for support.
- Rotate the thighs in. Be sure not to let your legs splay out and away from each other. Instead, focus on rotating your thighs toward each other.
- Engage your core. Drawn your navel toward your spine and keep your abdominal muscles strong and steady. This is the most important step in protecting your lower back.
- Keep your shoulders down and away from your ears. Whether you’re doing a gentle cobra or a dynamic wheel, make sure your neck is long and your shoulders aren’t hunched up toward your ears.
Ben completed his first teacher training with Jim Harrington and went on to further study with Matthew Sweeney. His personal practice includes the Intermediate Ashtanga series, as well as the Vinyasa Krama Sequences of Matthew Sweeney—Chandra, the Moon sequence; Simha, the Lion Sequence; and Baddha, the Bound sequence. Ben loves movement in all expressions and can be found off the yoga mat hiking, surfing and playing like a child in a tree. Beyond the physical, Ben’s personal exploration of yoga has also inspired him to travel to India, start Vipassana Meditation, pursue Yoga Philosophy and move into a vegetarian diet. He has a quirky love for fermented foods and will happily trade recipes for kimchi or kombucha.
